Anna Reinhart

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Anna Reinhart (* around 1484 in Zurich ; † December 24, 1538 there ) was the wife of the Zurich reformer Ulrich Zwingli .

Life

Anna Reinhart was born around 1484 as the daughter of the Zurich host couple Oswald and Elisabeth Reinhart. She is said to have been "an overly beautiful syn". In 1504 she married the Junker Hans Meyer von Knonau against the will of his father, who disinherited his son. The young family had three children: Margaretha (* 1505), Agathe (* 1507) and Gerold (* 1509). After 13 years of marriage, her first husband died in 1517 after being wounded on a military campaign. Her son Gerold was taken in by the von Knonau family in 1512. She continued to live in the «Höfli», not far from Zurich's Grossmünster .

From 1522 she lived in secret marriage with the people priest Ulrich Zwingli, whom she had fostered in 1519 after he fell ill with the plague . This was probably one of the reasons that Zwingli and several other co-signers wrote a petition to the Bishop of Constance in 1522 so that he could be freed from celibacy . The marriage was officially concluded on April 2, 1524, shortly before the birth of their child Regula (* July 31, 1524). Other children followed: Wilhelm (born January 29, 1526), Huldrich (born January 6, 1528) and Anna (born May 4, 1530, died in the same year). Seven years after the public marriage, Anna was widowed again.

Her husband died on October 11, 1531 in the second battle near Kappel . With him she also lost her first son Gerold, Anton Wirz, the husband of the eldest daughter Margaretha, her brother Bernhard and a brother-in-law. After this loss, Anna and two of her children were accepted by Zwingli's successor, Heinrich Bullinger . Anna Reinhart died in the winter of 1538.
