Anna of the Palatinate

Life

Anna von der Pfalz came from the Wittelsbach family . She was the daughter of Count Palatine Rudolf II and his wife Anna from Tyrol. The Bohemian King Heinrich of Carinthia was her maternal great-great-uncle. No traditions are known from childhood. At the age of 20, she was married to the Bohemian and German kings on March 4, 1349 at Stahleck Castle . Until the marriage, Rudolf II was one of the most important opponents of Charles IV. In February 1349 he was on the side of the anti-king Günther von Schwarzburg . This diplomatic move initiated by Charles IV had not only reduced the number of opponents, it also acquired parts of the Upper Palatinate , the so-called New Bohemia . At the beginning of November 1349 Anna was crowned queen in St. Vitus Cathedral . At this point she was already heavily pregnant and the king and the whole country were now impatiently waiting for the birth of an heir. Mid-January 1350 she gave birth to a son, who after the Bohemian patron in the name Wenzel was baptized. The child died in December 1351, followed by the young Queen Anna a year later. At the age of 37, Karl became a widower for the second time with one child, his daughter Katharina . She lived at the Viennese court and was engaged to the Habsburg Prince Rudolf . Although Karl's younger brother, Margrave Johann Heinrich, became a father in 1351, there was still a risk that the Luxembourg dynasty would die out and the Habsburgs could get Bohemia. Charles IV married Anna von Schweidnitz in 1353 .
