The localities Elsau, Räterschen, Rümikon, Ober- and Unterschottikon , Fulau, Unter- and Oberschnasberg and Tolhusen belong to the municipality.

The municipality of Elsau is located in the Eulach Valley , which was formed during the last Ice Age. The landscape is characterized by moraine hills . 56.5% of the municipal area is used for agriculture, 25.9% is covered with forest, 6.1% is traffic area and 10.9% is settlement area, 0.5% is water.

politics

In the 2019 National Council elections, the share of the vote in Elsau was: SVP 31.45%, glp 13.92%, FDP 13.56%, SP 12.62%, Greens 12.49%, CVP 4.91%, EPP 4.27 %, BDP 2.53% and EDU 2.27%.

The mayor is Jürg Frutiger (as of May 2020).

history

Traces of a Roman estate have been found near Tolhusen .

The villages of Rümikon and Schottikon were first mentioned in documents in 829. Elsau was first mentioned as Elnesouva in 1043. In the middle of the 11th century, a ministerial family "von Elsau" is attested to having its seat south of Elsau on the Burgstall hill (also called Balchenstall). A Konrad is mentioned in a document as the last representative of the family in 1350. Together with Winterthur, the community came under the rule of the city of Zurich in 1462.

In 1922 Schottikon was incorporated into the municipality of Elsau.

traffic

The municipality of Elsau is connected to the Zurich S-Bahn network with the Räterschen and Schottikon stations. They are on the St. Gallen – Winterthur railway line . The two stations are served by the S 35 Winterthur - Wil and the S 12 Brugg - Altstetten - Zurich HB - Stadelhofen - Winterthur - Schaffhausen / Wil of the S-Bahn Zurich. In addition, the community is served by the Postbus line 680 Winterthur, HB - Elsau - Schlatt ZH - Hofstetten ZH - Elgg . From December 2019, bus line 7 will run from Wülflingen station - Winterthur, HB - Elsau, Melcher from Stadtbus Winterthur to Elsau.

Art and culture

The school offer includes kindergartens, primary schools and a separate secondary school (together with the municipality of Schlatt).

There are two scout departments in Elsau : Bubenberg and Eschenberg. The Bubenberg department has existed since 1942, Trupp Klingsor since 1951.

In 1962 the FC Räterschen was founded. The 1st team plays in the 3rd division .
