Annabelle doll

Annabelle is the name of a cloth doll , especially known in the USA , that is said to have been possessed by a demon . The stories about unusual occurrences in their environment also inspired film adaptations. The doll is exhibited in a private museum.

description

Annabelle is designed in the style of Raggedy Ann . She has shoulder-length, red hair made of thick strands of fabric, freckles and a triangular, red nose. She wears a floral blouse and a white apron dress as well as red and white ringed knee socks. Her shoes are black and decorated with red laces. Annabelle is about the size of a four year old child.

backgrounds

Annabelle became known through the couple Ed and Lorraine Warren , who had made a name for themselves in the USA as " haunted researchers " with lectures and book publications . They followed up on the case of Annabelle . The doll originally belonged to a student nurse named Deirdre "Donna" Bernard, who received the doll in 1970 for her 28th birthday. Donna was living in a dormitory with a roommate at the time. Both women contacted a medium who claimed that the ghost of a girl named Annabelle Higgins resided in the doll . Ed and Lorraine Warren also examined the doll and found it to be possessed by a demon who had faked a false identity, and said they were attempting an exorcism .

The descriptions of the case by the authors and skeptics Robert B. Durham, Robert Young and Karen Stollznow unanimously name some unusual occurrences that were associated with the doll by the representatives of this legend, such as movements or the appearance of unusual written messages and blood-like fluids. The accounts of Young and Durham, which are associated with the private parapsychological organization American Institute of Parapsychology , go well beyond those of Karen Stollznow, which was published in some American skeptic magazines.

Whereabouts and aftermath

Karen Stollznow names Annabelle along with an older case, the Doll Robert , which caused a sensation in Key West in the early 20th century . The statement "Robert did it" is now proverbial there. Stollznow sees a possible cause for urban legends about possessed dolls in the rather empty or constantly smiling facial expressions of dolls, which make such an assignment easier. Both Robert and Annabelle are now housed in museums, both also inspired film adaptations.

Annabelle is on display as an attraction at The Warren's Occult Museum in Monroe , Connecticut . It is locked in a showcase , on the glass door hangs a note with the inscription: Warning! Positively do not open! ("Warning! Do not open under any circumstances!").

reception

The Annabelle case served as the inspiration for the opening scene of the American horror film Conjuring - The Visitation from 2013, in which the doll made a cameo , and its spin-off Annabelle from 2014, which reproduces the narrative in a significantly exaggerated form , as well as its prequel Annabelle 2 from 2017. In 2019 the third part Annabelle 3 followed .

The doll Annabelle made brief cameos in James Wan's films Conjuring 2 from 2016 and Aquaman from 2018, as well as in the horror mystery thriller Llorona's Curse and the comic book adaptation Shazam! from 2019.
