Annalen der Physik is an important physical journal . It has been published since 1799. From 1819 to 1824 (Vol. 61–76) the journal was entitled Annalen der Physik und der Physical Chemistry and from 1824 to 1899 (Vol. 77–305) the title Annalen der Physik und Chemie .

Characterization of the journal

The Annalen der Physik emerged as the successor to a series of journals that had been published by the German chemist Friedrich Albrecht Carl Gren . He first published the Journal der Physik from 1790 to 1794 , which was later followed by a New Journal of Physics from 1795 to 1797 . After his death, the series of journals with the title Annalen der Physik , which is still in use today , was continued by Ludwig Wilhelm Gilbert , professor at the University of Halle.

The articles were initially written exclusively in German. After the Second World War, English-language publications were added and, after a roughly balanced relationship at the end of the 1970s, gained the upper hand. Since 1992, the beginning of the 8th episode, the magazine has been published entirely in English; only the title was retained.

Any drawings were added on copper plates for the first few years.

The heyday of physics in German-speaking countries at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century led to lively publication activity, so that up to three volumes, each with around 1000 pages, consisting of consecutive issues, appeared each year. The annals reached their greatest size in 1914, when around 3800 pages were published, divided into 24 issues or three volumes. Currently, a volume is published every year, consisting of twelve issues (some double issues) with a total of around 800 pages.

In addition, from 1877 there were supplements to the annals of physics , in which books and articles were briefly referred to. They appeared up to Volume 43 from 1919 and were succeeded by the Physical Reports , which appeared from 1920 to 1967.

Counting method and publisher

Footnotes from Wiedemanns Annalen 31 (1887, Volume 267), p. 641: There are references to Poggendorffs Annalen (footnotes 1 and 3), references to the current episode (footnote 4, Wiedemanns Annalen ) as well as the alternative self-designation as 31st volume of the new series ( NF )

  • Volumes 1 to 76 (1799 to 1824), editor: Ludwig Wilhelm Gilbert . When the publisher changed in 1809, a new way of counting was introduced (Volume 1 = Volume 31 in the previous way of counting), which was later abandoned. Volume 61 (1819) gives the journal the (additional) title Annals of Physics and Physical Chemistry .
  • Poggendorffs Annalen : Volumes 77 to 236 (1824 to 1876) are referred to as Pogg. By their editor Johann Christian Poggendorff . Ann. named. Volume 77 is Volume 1 of Poggendorff's Annals, which are now entitled Annals of Physics and Chemistry . Each 30 volumes are combined into a row, so that there are 5 complete rows, the 6th and last row comprises 10 volumes. So it is noted on the 128th volume next to the corresponding Roman numerals CXXVIII that it is the eighth volume of the fifth row.
  • Wiedemann's Annals : Volumes 237 to 305 (1877 to 1899) are named in references after their editor Gustav Heinrich Wiedemann , often abbreviated as Wied. Ann. and restarted in the count: Volume 237 is Volume 1 of Wied. Ann . In 1893, Wiedemann's son Eilhard Wiedemann joined the company as editor. As before, the journal bears the title Annals of Physics and Chemistry . The self-designation on the cover of the books is initially Poggendorf Annalen New Series with the edition number counted since 1877.
  • 4th episode : With volume 306, the fourth episode begins again under the original title Annalen der Physik and the sequence count is noted on the title pages from this point on. In references, this episode appears simply as Ann. d. Phys , occasionally preceding the volume number with a parenthesized (4) to indicate the fourth episode. More rarely, the name occurs after its first editor Paul Karl Ludwig Drude . With volume 326 (volume 21 of the fourth episode), Wilhelm Wien and Max Planck took over the editing in 1906 up to volume 392 (1928). From now on, the publication takes place with the "participation of the German Physical Society ".
  • 5th episode : Volumes 393 to 435 (1929 to 1946), editors: Max Planck and Eduard Grüneisen , Volume 393 = Volume 1 of the 5th episode
  • 6th episode : Volumes 436 to 455 (1947 to 1957): Friedrich Possible is added as editor , Planck leaves after volume 1, Grüneisen after volume 4. With volume 445 Hans Kopfermann is added.
  • 7th episode : Volumes 456 to 503 (1957 to 1991): editors up to and including volume 463 (volume 8 of the 7th episode) are Hans Kopfermann and Gustav Richter , then G. Richter and HJ Treder and W. Walcher.
  • 8th episode : Volumes from 504 (1992), complete conversion to English, only the title Annalen der Physik is retained. When the publisher changes (Volume 7 of the 8th episode), the continuous counting since 1799 on the title page no longer applies (for the last time Volume 6 of the 8th episode = Volume 509), but will be resumed as Volume 522 when the issue is published in June 2010 Volume 19 of the 8th episode = Volume 522).

publishing company

The first editions up to volume 30 (1808) appeared in the Rengerschen Buchhandlung in Halle, from volume 31 (1809) the publisher Johann Ambrosius Barth from Leipzig took over the publication - by no means by mutual agreement . The edition was around 750 copies in 1828. The publishing location remained during the division of Germany. It was not until 1988 that the independent company became a state- owned company under the name VEB Johann Ambrosius Barth Leipzig . The magazine has been published by Wiley-VCH since 1998 (volume 7 of the 8th episode = volume 510) .
