Annette Funicello Joanne (* 22. October 1942 in Utica , New York ; † 8. April 2013 in Bakersfield , California ) was an American pop - singer and actress .

Life

The Funicello family moved to Los Angeles during Annette's early childhood , as her father hoped for better career opportunities there. Her mother registered Annette for dance lessons and inadvertently laid the foundation for Annette's artistic career. At a public dance performance, Walt Disney became aware of Annette and hired her as a musketeer for his popular television program The Mickey Mouse Show in 1955 . Annette had developed into one of the most popular musketeers by 1957 and was already receiving numerous fan mail at that time.

Annette sang the song How Will I Know My Love on a television show , which Disney loved so much that he put it on record for his newly formed record company Disneyland Records . In the summer of 1959, 16-year-old Annette landed with the title Tall Paul at number 7 on the Billboard singles chart , and rose to become a teenage star in America. During this time, she released her long-playing record Annette Sings Anka , a result of her brief love affair with Paul Anka , who had previously dedicated his hit Puppy Love to her. Since Disneyland Records was mainly aimed at the children's audience, Annette switched to the pop-oriented sister company Buena Vista in 1959 . Her records, which were still only released under her first name, were all successful there until 1961. With O Dio Mio she reached number 10 on Billboard again. Annette stayed under contract with Vista until 1965, then switched to Tower Records , but no more big hits were made.

In the mid-sixties, Annette Funicello started another career, now as a film actress. After she had previously acted in numerous Disney TV series, she took on the female lead in the film series Beach , which began in 1964 with Beach Party . Her partner was fellow singer Frankie Avalon . 1987 both appeared again in the beach revival Back To The Beach . The music extracts from the film Monkey's Uncle , also released in 1964, became Annette's most successful long-playing record. In the film of the same name, they accompanied the Beach Boys in the opening scene. After her leading role in 1968 in the Monkees cult film Head , Funicello largely withdrew from show business and devoted herself mainly to her family. She had married her manager in 1965 and became a mother for the first time in 1966, and her third child was born in 1974. In 1987 Annette fell ill with multiple sclerosis , but this did not prevent her from founding a teddy bear company a few years later and bringing out the self-created perfume "Cello". In addition, she was involved in charitable organizations, such as B. in the Annette Funicello Fund for Neurological Diseases . In 1993 she received a star on the Walk of Fame , a year later she published her autobiography A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes: My Story , which was also released as a television film in 1995.

In 2013, she passed away from complications from MS at the age of 70.
