The Pentax K200D is an entry-level digital SLR camera that was introduced in January 2008. It has a CCD sensor with an effective resolution of 10.2 million pixels, the maximum image size is 3872 × 2592 pixels. It is the successor model of the Pentax K100D and its derivatives, but has adopted a lot of functionality from the higher-rated Pentax K10D .

With the Pentax Km , marketed in the USA under the name Pentax K2000 , an even cheaper entry-level model finally came onto the European market in summer 2008.

important characteristics

The K200D has a CCD sensor with an effective resolution of 10.2 megapixels and has the Shake Reduction image stabilization system that works with all lenses , in which the sensor is movably mounted. The electromagnetic sensor movement can also be used to shake off any impurities that may adhere to the sensor. The K200D is protected against splash water and dust by a system of 60 seals (just like the Pentax K10D).

The exposure parameters can be adjusted using a thumbwheel on the top right corner of the back of the camera. The functions of the wheel are defined in the respective exposure programs and some can be configured.

As usual for an entry-level model, the K200D has motif programs and an automatic motif program with which the exposure is adapted to the shooting situation. In addition to the usual automatic exposure programs, automatic aperture and time automatic, it also has the Sv program introduced in the K10D , in which the ISO value can be selected with the adjusting dial. In addition, the K200D is equipped with an ISO automatic with a selectable maximum value, the ISO range extends from 100 to 1600. In program P , the parameters sharpness, colors and contrast for the JPEG creation on the camera side can be configured and in several predefined ones Store profiles.

The camera saves RAW images either in Pentax's own PEF format or in the universal DNG format developed by Adobe . The K200D has its own button for temporary switching to RAW format. Images recorded as RAW files can subsequently be converted into JPEG format within the camera using adjustable parameters.

Power is supplied by four standard AA (Mignon) cells.

Bayonet and lenses

The K200D is equipped with the K AF2 bayonet in the version without a mechanical aperture simulator . Lenses that have an aperture ring without an A position can only be used with a working aperture measurement. This applies to all lenses that are equipped with the original version of the K bayonet and were manufactured from 1977 to around 1984. When using such lenses, however, the camera can be automatically dimmed briefly by pressing the green button and the exposure determined ( auto-working aperture measurement ). The reason for this procedure is the lack of feedback about the set aperture from the lens to the camera housing. This operating mode must first be activated in the settings menu. Lenses with so-called power zoom can also be used, although the electrical focal length adjustment cannot be used, because the electrical contacts provided on the bayonet are now used for the ultrasonic motor for the autofocus.

In addition to lenses with a K bayonet, M42 lenses can be used in conjunction with adapters. The shutter mechanism is not activated by the camera.

Focus

The autofocus has eleven sensors, nine of which are cross sensors, and shows the focus point in the viewfinder as a luminous point; it is also possible to choose a specific sensor for focusing. In addition to the conventional autofocus drive, i.e. a motor built into the housing, the bayonet also has electrical contacts for controlling SDM lenses with their own ultrasonic motor .

When focusing manually, the center AF sensor is active as an aid, and when the focus point is reached, this is indicated in the viewfinder. The focusing screen does not have any setting aids such as a sectional image indicator or a microprism ring , and Pentax does not offer any alternative focusing screens . However, an exchange is technically possible and there are other providers who sell alternative focusing screens. In addition, the K200D has a “focus trap” known as a catch-in-focus , which releases the shutter when an object is recognized as being in focus.

With the stop-down button you can either create a digital preview image or close the aperture briefly before the exposure in order to get a preview of the depth of field through the viewfinder.

Tests and reviews

While many tests of the Pentax K200D certified good image quality in the raw data format, the quality of the JPEG images was criticized in terms of noise reduction and color. However, with the wide range of setting options, the user can change the conservative factory settings and adapt them to personal preferences.
