The Pentax KP is a compact 24-megapixel digital single lens reflex camera from the Japanese manufacturer Ricoh , which was presented in January 2017 at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas . The two models in black and silver will be available in Europe from February 23, 2017. The camera won the TIPA (Technical Image Press Association) award as "BEST APS-C DSLR EXPERT" in 2017. This camera is a new model, which is located in the middle segment of Pentax cameras. It is not a replacement for the current APS-C top model Pentax K-3 II , which can be seen from the choice of the D-Li109 battery, only one card slot and a shutter life of 100,000 releases. The well-known Pentax-typical properties of the AA filterless design with the selectable two-stage moiré suppression, the pixel shift resolution, the tilt function (± 1 mm translation horizontally and vertically and ± 1 ° rotation), automatic horizon correction (± 1.5 °) and the astro-tracer function - with additional GPS - through the image stabilization built into the camera are available. The glass prism with a 100% field of view was newly developed for this camera. The camera is typically Pentax developed with a focus on photography, it is able to record video in full HD (1920 × 1080) and HD (1280 × 720), 4K modes are not supported.

The innovations compared to the manufacturer's existing digital models include an interchangeable handle, with alternative handles in three sizes being offered by the manufacturer, as well as series modes for varying aperture and shutter speed. In addition, the new 24 MPix CMOS sensor supports the new highest exposure index ISO 819200, and an additional image processor significantly improves the image quality, also with regard to noise. The system of five-axis stabilization that was developed for the Pentax K-1 was installed in an APS-C camera for the first time, as was the WLAN module and a further development of the function dial, so that the user can choose three functions as required can put on this. The five user modes of the K-1 have also been adopted. In addition, a silent electronic shutter with a range of 30 seconds to 1/24000 of a second is built-in, this shutter releases noiselessly in the live view and is without any vibrations, with the optical viewfinder only the very quiet mirror beating can be heard. The 3-inch monitor can be folded and tilted vertically.

In Japan, Ricoh announced an infrared version of the camera in July 2019, this has a spectral range from 350 to 1100 nm. It thus extends from the near edge of the UV-A (320-400 nm) to the IR-A range (700-1400 nm). The appropriate wavelength range is selected using screw filters on the optics. With the right filter selection, it can also be fully used in the visible area.
