The Pentax K10D is a digital single lens reflex camera that was presented at Photokina 2006 and came onto the market in November 2006. In spring 2008, the K10D was replaced by the similar successor model, the Pentax K20D .

important characteristics

Top

The K10D has a CCD sensor with an effective resolution of 10.2 megapixels. It has the image stabilization system Shake Reduction , which works with all lenses and in which the sensor is movably mounted. The electromagnetic sensor movement can also be used to shake off any impurities that may adhere to the sensor. The K10D is protected against splash water and dust by a system of 72 seals.

The exposure parameters can be controlled using two dials, one at the front under the shutter release and one at the top right corner of the back of the camera. The functions of the wheels in the respective exposure programs can be configured in many ways.

The K10D broke new ground in exposure programs. It does not have the motif programs that are common with entry- level models , but for the first time has the TAv and Sv programs for regulating the ISO setting. In TAv mode , the camera automatically selects the appropriate ISO value for the manually preselected time and aperture values. The Sv mode is an automatic program in which the ISO value can be selected using one of the setting wheels. In addition, the K10D is equipped with an automatic ISO system with selectable maximum and minimum values. A camera configuration can be saved and quickly called up via the user program.

The camera is able to save RAW images both in Pentax's own PEF format and in the universal DNG format developed by Adobe . The K10D has its own button for temporarily switching to RAW format. Images recorded as RAW files can subsequently be converted into JPG format inside the camera with adjustable parameters.

Power is supplied by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery of the type D-LI50 (compatible with the type NP-400). Like the Pentax *, it is DL and in contrast to earlier digital SLR cameras from Pentax, the K10D no longer supports analog TTL flash units. Such flashes can either be used fully manually or in automatic mode (if the flash supports this). From firmware version 1.10 the K10D is able to optically wirelessly control external system flashes that are not connected to the camera using the built-in flash.

Bayonet and lenses

Front view without lens

The K10D is equipped with the K AF2 bayonet in the version without a mechanical aperture simulator . In addition to the conventional autofocus drive, i.e. a motor built into the housing, the bayonet also has electrical contacts for controlling SDM lenses with their own ultrasonic motor . To actually use the SDM drive, the camera must be updated to firmware version 1.30. The power zoom function available on some Pentax lenses can also be used. Lenses that have an aperture ring without an A position can only be used with a working aperture measurement. This applies to variants of the K bayonet that were mainly manufactured before 1984. When using such lenses, however, the camera can be automatically dimmed briefly by pressing the green button and the exposure determined ( auto-working aperture measurement ).

In addition to lenses with a K bayonet, M42 lenses can be used in conjunction with adapters. The shutter mechanism is not activated by the camera.

Samsung GX-10

As a result of the cooperation between Pentax and Samsung , an almost identical sister model of the K10D, the Samsung GX-10, was created . This differs from the Pentax K10D only in the changed firmware and a slightly different case with a thicker handle, different buttons and labels as well as a different leather covering. Only DNG is available as RAW format for the Samsung model. Services are not carried out by Pentax, but by Samsung authorized workshops.

Awards

The K10D received the TIPA 2007 Award for the best “Expert Digital SLR”. In August 2007, the K10D was named "European Camera of the Year 2007-2008" by EISA . In May 2007 she was also the winner of the Japanese Camera Grand Prix. This prompted Pentax to produce a special edition of the camera with, among other things, brown leather and the gold imprint "CAMERA GRAND PRIX 2007".

K10D in an altitude balloon

In an experiment to measure the cosmic cosmic radiation of Oklahoma State University was on 11 July 2008 in an altitude balloon a K10D used for photography as one of the instruments. During the approximately two-hour balloon flight, an altitude of over 30,000 m (104,000 ft) was reached with an outside temperature of −51 ° C. The camera, like the other instruments, was housed in simple protective housings in order to survive the landing on the parachute. A selection of the images of the structure and images of the earth from different heights was published on the Internet.
