António André dos Santos Ferreira called António André (born December 24, 1957 in Vila do Conde ) is a former Portuguese football player .

Player career

António André comes from a fishing family from Vila do Conde. He began his footballing career as a teenager with his home club Rio Ave FC . In 1978 he received his first professional contract with Varzim SC . The 1.71-meter tall defensive midfielder continued to work with his family in the fishery, making 104 appearances at Varzim in six years, scoring 19 goals. With Varzim, the defensive player rose from the end of the 1980/81 season in the second division, but managed to get up again immediately. After receiving two classes, André moved to the national top club FC Porto in the summer of 1984 . After initial problems and bad luck with injuries, the midfielder established himself at FCP . In the following nine years he won a total of 19 titles with Porto. The highlight was winning the European Champion's Cup in 1987 . On the way to the final, they prevailed against teams such as Brøndby IF and Dynamo Kiew , before the team faced FC Bayern Munich in the final . André was left on the field for the full playing time by coach Artur Jorge and thus helped his team to a 2-1 success and thus their first title in this competition. In 1992, the Paulinho Santos club committed , with whom André fought for a regular place from then on. Sixteen years his junior Santos finally prevailed. André ended his career with FC Porto in 1995 at the age of 37. He was rarely used under the coach of the time, Bobby Robson .

National team

In the Portuguese national team André made his debut in 1985. He made a total of 20 internationals and was part of the Portuguese squad at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico . André played in the first round match against England, which his team won 1-0, and then in the 0-1 defeat against Poland. Portugal eliminated after the preliminary round.

Coaching career

At the end of his career, André was accepted into the coaching staff of FC Porto, assisting many of the club's past head coaches. In this post he won the 2004 UEFA Champions League under José Mourinho and the UEFA Cup the previous year .
