António Fernandes (chess player)

António Fernandes (born October 18, 1962 in Pampilhosa da Serra ) is a Portuguese chess player .

He won the Portuguese individual championship sixteen times: 1980, 1983 to 1985, 1989 to 1992, 1996, 2001, 2006, 2008, 2014 to 2016, 2018. He played for Portugal in eighteen chess Olympiads : 1980 to 2006 , 2010 to 2012 , 2016 to 2018 . At the 1992 Chess Olympiad , he received an individual bronze medal for his result on the second board. He took part in the European team championships five times (1989, 1992, 1999, 2001 and 2017).

In 1993 he took part in the European Club Cup with TLP Lisboa . In England he played in the Four Nations Chess League 2001/02 for Slough .

In 1985 he became International Master (by winning a zone tournament ), since 2003 he has held the title of Grand Master . Its Elo rating is 2353 (as of March 2020), its highest to date was 2495 in January 1998.
