Antônio Gonçalves Dias
Antônio Gonçalves Dias , (born August 10, 1823 in Caxias , Maranhão , † November 3, 1864 in Guimarães , Maranhão ), was a Brazilian poet . He was the son of a Portuguese father and a mother who had Indian and black ancestors, and is considered to be an early representative of a romantic Indianismo .
Life
Dias came to Portugal in 1838, studied philosophy and law at the University of Coimbra and later worked as a public prosecutor ( procurador publico ) in Maranhão . He later moved to Rio de Janeiro , where he took part in various literary journals , particularly with an interest in the theater , and published the drama Léonor de Mendoça (1847), the material of which he took from Portuguese history . His reputation as a poet was established by the Primeiros cantos (Rio de Janeiro 1846), who produced numerous imitations and made a significant contribution to giving the young literary development of Brazil a new impetus and a more national direction. The Segundos cantos (Rio de Janeiro 1848) soon followed , among which the ballads Gesang von Tabira and the Ode to the residents of Pernambuca were particularly well received . In 1850 he brought out the Ultimos cantos (Rio de Janeiro 1850).
In recognition of his services, Dias had since been appointed professor of history at the Colégio Pedro II in Rio de Janeiro, received a position in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ( Secretaria dos Negócios Estrangeiros ) in 1851 and was commissioned with a scientific mission to Europe in 1855 , from which he was only in 1858 returned to Brazil.
Soon afterwards he took part as a historian and ethnographer in the expedition of the Comissão Científica de Exploração , which was organized by the government to explore the Brazilian state of Ceará and the banks of the Amazon . However, Dias felt so attacked by the exertion of the journey that in 1862 he undertook a second trip to Europe to relax, where he visited Dresden , Teplice , Lisbon , Savoy and most recently Paris . In September 1864 he embarked for Brazil again, but died on the way shortly before the ship was shipwrecked on the coast of Maranhão.
