The Antel Arena (spelling: ANTEL Arena ) is a multi-purpose hall in the Villa Española district of the Uruguayan capital Montevideo . The owner and namesake is the state telecommunications company ANTEL (Administración Nacional de Telecomunicaciones) based in the capital. The event hall is operated by AEG Facilities , a division of the Anschutz Entertainment Group .
history
The Antel Arena was built on the grounds of the Cilindro Municipal from 1956, in the u. a. the basketball world championship took place in 1967 . On April 2, 2013, it was decided to build a modern hall. A few days after the agreement, the preparatory work to clear the site began. The design competition for the arena design started on April 20, 2013. A total of 73 proposals were submitted. Five winners were presented on August 16 of that year. They had until October 29th to present the revised projects. The winning design was announced on November 12, 2013. A team led by the architects Pablo Bacchetta, Jose Flores and Rodrigo Carámbula won. The Antel Arena is designed for sporting events such as B. basketball , tennis or futsal . In addition, concerts , family shows such as Disney on Ice or the Cirque du Soleil , cultural events as well as exhibitions or conferences are organized. With an implosion on May 12, 2014, the still standing outer wall of the Cilindro Municipal was torn down. After the rubble had been cleared , construction of the new multi-purpose arena began. The Antel Arena was officially opened on November 12, 2018. The planned construction costs of 82 million US dollars were exceeded. In the end, the cost was $ 90.5 million. As part of the qualification for the 2019 Basketball World Cup , the Uruguayan national basketball team played in the second round at the Antel Arena on November 29, 2018 against Puerto Rico (64:62) and days later on December 2 against the United States (70:78) . Argentina and Uruguay competed together for the 2023 World Basketball Championship . The Antel Arena was planned as the venue in Uruguay. However, the joint application of the Philippines , Indonesia and Japan was awarded the contract in December 2017 .
