Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 8th Earl of Shaftesbury

Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 8th Earl of Shaftesbury ( June 27, 1831 - April 13, 1886 ), was a British peer and politician .

He was the eldest son of Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 7th Earl of Shaftesbury , and Lady Emily Cowper, daughter of Peter Cowper, 5th Earl Cowper . As his father's apparent marriage , he carried the courtesy title of Lord Ashley from 1851 to 1885 . He attended rugby school in Warwickshire and then served as an officer in the Royal Navy . In 1854 he took part in the Crimean War.

From 1857 he also held the post of Deputy Lieutenant of Dorset . He was also elected to the House of Commons for the first time in 1857 . He was an MP for the constituency of Kingston upon Hull from 1857 and for Cricklade from 1859 to 1865 . When his father died in 1885, he inherited his title as 8th Earl of Shaftesbury . He received a seat in the House of Lords , which is why he left the House of Commons. He committed suicide the next year and was inherited as the Earl of Shaftesbury by his only son.

On June 10, 1830 he had married Lady Harriet Augusta Anna Seymourina Chichester, daughter of George Chichester, 3rd Marquess of Donegall . With her he had five daughters and one son.
