Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 9th Earl of Shaftesbury KP GCVO GCStJ CBE PC (born August 31, 1869 - March 25, 1961 ), was a British nobleman who was Lord Lieutenant of Belfast between 1904 and 1911 and Lord Lieutenant from 1911 to 1916 of County Antrim and last was Lord Lieutenant of the County of Dorset between 1916 and 1952 . He was also Lord Steward of the Household from 1922 to 1936 .

Life

Family origin

Ashley-Cooper was the fifth of six children and the only son of Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 8th Earl of Shaftesbury , and his wife Harriet Augusta Anna Seymourina Chichester, daughter of George Chichester, 3rd Marquess of Donegall .

His eldest sister Mildred Georgiana Ashley was the wife of George Higginson Allsopp , who represented the constituency of Worcester as a member of the House of Commons for the Conservative Party between 1885 and 1906 . His second oldest sister Margaret Emily Ashley-Cooper was married to Theophilus Basil Percy Levett, a son of the House of Commons Theophilus John Levett . His third oldest sister Evelyn Harriet Ashley-Cooper was her first marriage from 1889 to his death in 1903 with James McGarel-Hogg, 2nd Baron Magheramorne, and in her second marriage between 1905 and her death in 1931 with Hugo Baring, who served as a major in various cavalry regiments , Director of Westminster Bank and who was a son of banker Edward Baring, 1st Baron Revelstoke . Earl of Shaftesbury and military career

After his father's suicide on April 13, 1886, at the age of 16, Anthony Ashley-Cooper inherited the title created on April 23, 1672 in the Peerage of England as 9th Earl of Shaftesbury, as well as the subordinate hereditary, also conferred in the Peerage of England Nobility title as 9th Baron Ashley and 9th Baron Cooper as well as the title created in the Baronetage of England as 10th Baronet, of Rockbourne . Upon reaching the age of 21, he was also formally a member of the House of Lords on August 31, 1890 , to which he belonged for 71 years until his death on March 25, 1961.

Anthony Ashley-Cooper began a military career during this time in 1889 and was second lieutenant in the cavalry regiment 10th Royal Hussars (Prince of Wales's Own) in 1890 , where he was promoted to lieutenant on June 10, 1891 . He was also Chancellor of Queen's University Belfast from 1909 to 1923 .

After the coronation of King George V as king on May 6, 1910, Ashley-Cooper became chamberlain to the now Queen Mary and performed this task until he was replaced by Charles Paget, 6th Marquess of Anglesey on November 28, 1922. In 1911 he succeeded Francis Edmund Workman-Macnaghten, 3rd Baronet as Lord Lieutenant of County Antrim and held this office for five years until he was replaced by Algernon Skeffington, 12th Viscount Massereene on June 9, 1916. On July 10, 1911 he was together with Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Viscount Kitchener , Knight of St. Patrick (KP). At the beginning of the First World War , Ashley-Cooper was recalled to active military service in 1914 as a Colonel with the temporary rank of Brigadier General ( Temporary Brigadier General ) and served at headquarters. Marriage and offspring

Anthony Ashley-Cooper married Constance Sibell Grosvenor on July 15, 1899, daughter of Victor Alexander Grosvenor, Earl Grosvenor, and granddaughter of Hugh Grosvenor, 1st Duke of Westminster . This marriage resulted in two sons and two daughters.

The eldest son and heir to the title Major Anthony Ashley-Cooper, Lord Ashley, had died on March 8, 1947 at the age of 46. This led to the fact that when the 9th Earl of Shaftesbury died on March 25, 1961, his grandson, his son Anthony Ashley-Cooper, Lord Ashley , inherited the title of 10th Earl of Shaftesbury .

His eldest daughter, Mary Sibell Ashley-Cooper, was married to Napier Sturt, 3rd Baron Alington . His younger daughter, Dorothea Louise Ashley-Cooper, was the wife of Antony Henry Head , a Conservative Party politician who was Secretary of War from 1951 to 1956 and Secretary of Defense from 1956 to 1957, and who was raised to hereditary nobility as Viscount Head in 1960 . Younger son Anthony John Percy Hugh Michael Ashley-Cooper was also a major.
