Anthony Wayne England (born May 15, 1942 in Indianapolis , Indiana ) is a retired American astronaut . England received a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Earth from Planetary Sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1965 . In 1970 he received his doctorate in the same discipline - also at MIT .

Before joining NASA, England worked at MIT for three years. There he developed radar systems for exploring the moon with Apollo 17 , as well as glaciers in Washington and Alaska. He was twice in Antarctica for research purposes .

Astronaut activity

In August 1967, England was selected as a science astronaut by NASA. During his subsequent training, he also went through a year of flight training at Laughlin Air Force Base . He was a member of the support teams for the Apollo 13 and Apollo 16 lunar missions .

In 1972 he left NASA and became the assistant director of the bureau of geochemistry and geophysics for the United States Geological Survey .

In 1979 England returned to the Johnson Space Center as a mission specialist and worked there in mission development in the astronauts office.

From May 1986 to May 1987 he was a program scientist for the International Space Station , which was then still called Freedom . From June 1987 to December 1987 he taught Remote Sensing Geophysics at Rice University .

STS-51-F

On July 29, 1985, England started as a mission specialist with the space shuttle Challenger for the Spacelab-2 mission ( STS-51-F ) into space. It was the first flight of the European space laboratory without a pressure module - the experiments, mainly in the disciplines of astronomy and astrophysics, had been installed on three pallets in the Challenger's hold. The crew worked in two shifts in order to achieve the maximum possible utilization of the experiments.
