Ancient legends

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ancient legends is the title of a collection of drypoint etchings by the artist Lovis Corinth , which was created in 1919 and published by the Marées Society in Dresden .

background

On May 17, 1918, the art historian and director of the Marées Society, Julius Meier-Graefe , suggested a portfolio of drypoint etchings from Lovis Corinth, which was supposed to have "a specific, not too narrowly defined object" as its theme. According to his ideas, it should be about the interpretation of a literary work or a collection of landscapes, still lifes or interiors . Corinth instead chose twelve themes from ancient Greek mythology and began work on the etchings during the final weeks of the First World War .

The collection includes twelve scenes from Greek mythology, some of which refer to earlier paintings by the artist. He chose an expressionistic style for the sensual and sometimes voluptuous pictures and at the same time processed his unease about the political situation in Germany.

The collection appeared in a run of 150 outputs, of which 100 to Bütten- and 50 on Japanese paper were printed.
