Peter-Klaus Schuster
Peter-Klaus Schuster (born October 9, 1943 in Calw ) is a German art historian , exhibition curator and museum director.
Life
After graduating from the Justus Liebig School in Darmstadt, Schuster studied art history, German literature and philosophy at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen, the University of Zurich , the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and the Georg- August University of Göttingen . This was followed by a scholarship at the Central Institute for Art History in Munich until 1977 . A traineeship at the Hamburger Kunsthalle in 1977/1978 was Schuster's first stop at a museum. From 1978 to 1981 he worked as a conservator for the arts and crafts of the 19th and 20th centuries at the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg. At the same time he had a teaching position at the University of Regensburg during this time . In 1981 he returned to the Hamburger Kunsthalle, where he worked as curator for old masters until 1983. This was followed by the position of senior curator for German art of the 20th century at the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen and a teaching position at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .
In 1988 Schuster moved to Berlin. Here he initially worked as chief curator and deputy director of the National Gallery in Berlin . From 1994 to 1997 he was director of the Alte Nationalgalerie . During his time at the Berlin museums, Schuster also taught at the Free University of Berlin . Schuster interrupted his work in Berlin for a year in 1998/99 in order to switch to the Bavarian State Painting Collections as General Director. From August 1, 1999 to October 31, 2008, Schuster was General Director of the State Museums in Berlin and Director of the National Gallery in Berlin. From January to June 2009 he worked as a Guest Scholar at the J. Paul Getty Museum .
Schuster was also u. a. Member of the Art Advisory Council of the Federal Government , the Art Commission for the new building of the Federal Chancellery and the specialist committee of the Federal Art Collection . He also serves on the board of the Brandenburg Gate Foundation , on the board of trustees of the Art Forum Foundation of the Berliner Volksbank and on the board of the German Association for Art Studies. During his time as director of the National Gallery, he was a member of the board of the Association of Friends of the National Gallery .
Services
In the course of the German reunification, Schuster made an outstanding contribution to the organizational consolidation and content-related profiling of the Nationalgalerie Berlin. In addition, he continues to try to integrate large private collections into the Nationalgalerie, such as the Berggruen , Marzona , Flick , Newton and most recently Scharf-Gerstenberg collections .
