Antonín Machát
Antonín Machát (also Anton Machat) (born November 5, 1880 in Lomnička , Moravia , † February 26, 1967 in Prague ) was a printing company owner, author, functionary in numerous Czech associations, in Vienna and in Vienna's municipal council.
Life
Anton Machát attended elementary school and trade school in Brno and learned the printing trade . Later he became a functionary in the Moravian printing house organization. It is not known when he came to Vienna .
Antonín Machát was the owner of Lidové Knihtiskárny Antonín Machát & Co. (People's Book Printing Company Antonín Machát & Co, limited partnership) at Margaretenplatz 7 in Margareten since 1911 . In his printing works, among other things, the newspaper Videnske Delnicke listy (Wiener Arbeiterblatt) was printed for the Czechs in Vienna . During the Second World War, leaflets were produced here for the communist resistance group around Alois Houdek.
In addition to his job, he held numerous functions in Czech organizations in Vienna:
- Secretary of the Czech National Committee
- Co-founder and secretary of the charity "České srdce - Bohemian Heart" founded in 1918
- Board member of the Czech Social Welfare Organization
- Editor of the body of Czech traders
After the municipal council elections in 1927, Anton Machát and seven other favorite Social Democrats moved to the Vienna City Council. As a social democratic mandate, he was arrested in 1934. In 1942 he belonged to the group of representatives of the Komensky Association who were informed by the Gestapo of the liquidation of the Komensky Association and the confiscation of the property in the former Hotel Metropol on Morzinplatz. He was identified by the Vienna Gestapo as a political opponent known to the police on August 22, 1944.
He was also active as an author and editor of Czech-language books.
After the Second World War he moved to Prague. There he became a member of the constituent committee as a representative of the Czechs who had emigrated from Vienna.
