Antonín Machek (also Anton Machek ; born October 31, 1775 in Podlažice , † November 18, 1844 in Prague ) was a Czech painter.

Life

Antonín Machek's artistic talent was discovered by the Königgrätzer Bishop Johann Leopold von Hay . He promoted Machek's training with his court painter Zitta. His other teachers included Wenzel Lorenz Reiner and Ludwig Kohl. From 1799 Machek studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts . He then worked as a portraitist in Steyr and Linz until 1814 , then in Prague. He introduced lithography in Bohemia and in 1828 founded an important lithographic workshop and printing house. In the twenties and thirties of the 19th century he was next to Franz Horčička the most important Prague portrait painter. After creating numerous pictures with patriotic themes on the history of Bohemia, he found recognition as one of the founders of Czech art in the era of the National Revival .

Machek created several realistic portraits, including those of Josef Jungmann , Václav Jan Křtitel Tomášek , Josef Božek , Václav Hanka and Josef Dobrovsky .

Together with Václav Hanka, he self-published the historical booklets Dějiny české v obrazích Kamenopisně vyvedených .
