family

Pehmöller comes from a respected Hamburg merchant family that originated in his grandfather, the confectioner Cord Nicolaus Pehmöller. He was the son of his father of the same name, the businessman Anton Daniel Pehmöller (1772–1826) and Dorothea Wilhelmine, nee. from Döhren. His cousin Franz Hinrich Pehmöller was superintendent of the Berlin Mission Society in South Africa . Pehmöller married his cousin Therese Philippine Pehmöller (born 1811), daughter of his uncle, the Hamburg senator and banker Christian Nicolas Pehmöller (1769–1845) and his wife Pauline Eleonore, born on December 10, 1839 . Meyer (1782-1872). They had a daughter together, Pauline Theresia Antonia (born 1845).

Life

Like his father, Pehmöller founded a trading house at Alter Wandrahm 26 in 1826 after taking his citizenship oath . In 1832 the company was briefly converted into a trading partnership, but was again run by him as sole owner in 1837. He later relocated to Dammtorstrasse 35, but kept his office in the old wall frame. From 1841 to 1846 he was also an elected commercial judge. His attempts to be elected to the Commerzdeputation since 1840 at the suggestion of the Commerzdeputation and the assembly of an honorable businessman , finally met with success on December 4, 1847. As a commercial deputy he was sent to the accession deputation (1848), customs deputation (1848) and the brokerage order (1848-1851), as well as to the bank deputation (1849). On February 2, 1850, he was elected President for one year. After his successor Robert Flor had to give up this office after only 2 months, Pehmöller took over the management of today's Chamber of Commerce again in 1851.

During his tenure in office, the rejection of the Chamber of Commerce to found a German customs association , which the Hamburg Senate wanted to approve at the Dresden Conferences in 1850/1851 after the failure of the customs union, attracted attention . As a result, Hamburg did not join until 1888.

Further honorary positions

Pehmöller was a committed free trader and demonstrably a member of the Association for Freedom of Trade from 1848 onwards. He was also a committed Freemason , was in 1825 by the lodge added "Ferdinand to the Rock" in 1835 raised to the Master and guided them from 1836 to 1838 as a master of the chair . At the same time, Pehmöller was an honorary member of the "Carl zum Felsen" lodge in Altona .
