Greven, short of stature and suffering from kyphosis , studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . There he was a student of Theodor Hildebrandt from 1831 to 1836 , who certified that he had good talents. Within the Düsseldorf school, Greven belonged to the circle around Johann Peter Hasenclever . He portrayed him as the central figure in the genre picture of the studio scene . Greven moved to Munich with Hasenclever in 1838 . After half a year he returned to his parents' house in Cologne, where he passed away soon after. The Cologne lithographer Johann Caspar Baum created a portrait of Greven in 1839.
