Anton Jäger was the eldest son of the "court and civil stonemason" Franz Jäger senior. He began his apprenticeship at the age of eight in 1787 in his father's stonemasonry and was acquitted after five years as a journeyman . He then completed an apprenticeship as a bricklayer from 1792 to 1795 with the builder Johann Georg Kornhäusel, who was a friend of his parents . In 1793 he attended the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna , but it is not known which courses he attended.

In 1795 he was acquitted as a journeyman bricklayer and in 1797 accepted as a pupil in the master builder's guild. On June 22nd, 1800 he passed the master craftsman's examination and was immediately entrusted with the construction management of the Theater an der Wien .

The Jäger family was respected and wealthy, so Anton Jäger was able to work as an art collector. He was married to Dorothea Freiin von Riefel (1785–1874), who owned properties in Maria Enzersdorf . Anton Jäger died shortly before his 86th birthday and is buried in the cemetery in Maria Enzersdorf.

Portrait medallion of the house "To the Roman Emperor"

Although Jäger was mainly active as a master builder, he is known for his work in the construction of the Theater an der Wien and for the two corner buildings of the “Klosterneuburger-Hof” based on designs by Johann Nepomuk Amann .

Two houses in Vienna's 6th district are considered to be important works : the "Zumgrün Thor" house, which was demolished in 1895 and is described as "magnificent with ornate lunettes", and the "Zum Roman Kaiser" house. This house has been preserved and is a listed building ( list entry ). It is a three-storey rental house with a shallow central risalit and arched openings on the ground floor. The risalit has three smooth lunettes on the first floor , the central arched opening on the first floor is decorated with a portrait medallion.
