Anton Jürgenstein
Anton Jürgenstein (born October 20 July / November 1, 1861 greg. In Vana-Vändra ; † February 21, 1933 in Tartu ) was an Estonian critic and journalist .
Life
Jürgenstein went to school in Vana-Vändra and Kodavere and from 1878 to 1882 attended the renowned seminar of Jānis Cimze in Valga . Then he was a teacher from the district school in Käru and a private tutor in Orajõe . From 1885 to 1905 he was a teacher and headmaster in Vändra . Since 1898 he was also editor of the magazine Linda , after Lilli Suburg had left the editorial office.
In 1906 Jürgenstein changed to the editorial office of the Postimees in Tartu. From 1923 he was editor-in-chief of the renowned newspaper, he was also politically active and was a member of the Second State Duma in 1907 and in the Estonian parliament in the interwar period .
Jürgenstein was a founding member of the Estonian Writers' Association and at times chairman of the Estonian Literary Society .

Jürgenstein first made his debut with features and a play before turning to literary criticism. In this area he wrote important treatises, for example on Mihkel Veske , Karl Eduard Sööt or Jakob Tamm , while he was opposed to the critical realism of Eduard Vilde .
Jürgenstein also worked as a translator from German. a. translated the first part of Goethe's Faust into Estonian.
Trivia
When the future chess grandmaster José Raúl Capablanca was in Tartu for a simultaneous tournament in 1913, he lost to Jürgenstein. The Estonian literary scholar Heino Puhvel later wrote a short story about it.
