Anton Rückauf's grave

Anton Rückauf (born March 13, 1855 in Prague , † September 19, 1903 in Alt-Erlaa near Vienna ) was an Austrian composer, pianist and music teacher.

Life

He attended the renowned Proksch Institute in Prague, where he was taught on the piano by Marie Proksch and on the organ by František Zdeněk Skuherský and František Blažek . In 1878 he moved to Vienna, where he worked as a pianist and teacher in upper-class (Arthur Schnitzler) and aristocratic circles and was introduced to the art of counterpointing by Martin Nottebohm and, after his death, by Karl Nawratil . From 1885 he studied for a while with Theodor Leschetitzky , who had revolutionized piano playing with a new method. His acquaintance with the tenor Gustav Walter had a great influence on his artistic development : on the one hand, Rückauf had great success as his constant piano accompanist, and on the other hand, he was inspired to compose numerous song compositions, which were also performed at concerts. Rückauf died of cancer at the age of 48 at Alterlaa Castle in Erlaa near Vienna (now the district of Vienna-Liesing ).

The City of Vienna has dedicated an honorary grave to him in the Central Cemetery (group 32A, number 12). The grave monument was designed by Franz Vogl , the creator of the Raimund Monument. In Oberdöbling (near the Döblinger Friedhof) the Rückaufgasse commemorates the artist. Anton Rückauf was single and lived at 6 Kopernikusgasse.

Works

His importance as a composer lies primarily in his songwriting. The more than 100 single-part piano songs he composed are characterized by careful declamation of the singing voice, which is supported by an independent, mostly difficult piano part. Rückauf was less happy in the field of chamber music, and his opera “Die Rosentalerin”, which was rejected in Vienna and performed in Dresden in 1897, did not bring him the success he had expected. From 1899 to 1901, Rückauf was in charge of the Protestant Singing Society and during this time it gained a good reputation among the Viennese public by organizing renaissance music evenings.
