Erlaa (1893–1938: Erlaa near Vienna ) was an independent municipality until 1938 and is now a district of Vienna in the 23rd district of Liesing and one of the 89 Viennese cadastral communities .

The cadastral municipality Erlaa covers an area of 238.96 hectares. The place is east and south of the river Liesing . Upstream is the Atzgersdorf district of Liesing , and the Inzersdorf district downstream . In the south, Erlaa borders the districts of Liesing and Siebenhirten and has a small border section to the Lower Austrian market town of Vösendorf .

Erlaa has two historical town centers: Alt-Erlaa and Neu-Erlaa. Alt-Erlaa lies in the northwest and is directly connected to the old town center of Atzgersdorf. The historic center of Neu-Erlaa is located in the southeast on Altmannsdorfer Straße before it crosses Triester Straße . The two old town centers have grown together today, but there are still undeveloped areas, such as the In der Wiesen urban expansion area . One of the larger residential buildings of recent times is the condominium complex “Am Schlosspark”, which was built from 1985 to 1987 according to plans by the architects Günther Suska and Wolfgang Maria Markowitsch.

Geologically speaking, Erlaa consists largely of Pleistocene gravel.

history

The first written mention of the place took place in 1114 as de Erila . The place grew only slowly and was mainly characterized by agriculture . In 1831 Erlaa only had 465 inhabitants. In 1835 the districts of Alt-Erlaa and Neu-Erlaa were mentioned for the first time. Today, however, the two parts have grown together again. The Erlaa cemetery was laid out between 1865 and 1867 .

With the dictatorial law of October 1, 1938, which came into effect on October 15, 1938, Vienna was enlarged to become " Greater Vienna " after the "annexation" of Austria to the German Reich and Erlaa was incorporated into 96 other towns. After the Second World War , Vienna and Lower Austria agreed in 1946 that Erlaa would remain with Vienna; 80 incorporated places were to be reassigned to Lower Austria. Due to a veto by the Soviet occupying power, the constitutional laws passed could only come into force in 1954. Erlaa has now become part of the new 23rd district. Today the place is increasingly urbanized.

In 1951, the place had 2909 inhabitants at the census. Today around 15,000 people live in Erlaa.

On September 19, 2008, an explosion caused a sensation, which was initially interpreted as an earthquake. It turned out that an aerial bomb weighing approx. 250 kg had exploded from the air raids of the Second World War . In the decades before, it had been lying undiscovered in the ground under a horticultural business in Meischlgasse, until the safety devices of its detonator failed and the explosion tore a 14 meter wide and around six meter deep crater.

Culture and sights

In Erlaa is the baroque Alterlaa Castle , which was built for Prince von Starhemberg at the end of the 18th century. The Roman Catholic parish church in Neuerlaa , built from 1960 to 1962, is the work of the architect Herbert Schmid. The old Erlaa parish hall, built in 1901, is located on Erlaaer Strasse. To the north-east of the old town center of Alt-Erlaa, but already in the Atzgersdorfer and Inzersdorfer area, the Alt-Erlaa residential park was built between 1973 and 1985 , which is one of the most famous residential areas in Vienna due to its architecture.

The ASK Erlaa is a football club from Erlaa, whose women's team plays in the ÖFB women's league.

In addition to the Alterlaa Castle Park, there are two public parks, the Michael Bausback Park and the PaN Park . The horse chestnut avenue between the castle and the Liesing river, which is almost 500 meters long, is protected as a natural monument .

An alder leaf on a blue background was chosen as the motif for the design of the part of the Liesingen coat of arms intended for Erlaa .

Economy and Infrastructure

Erlaa has been connected to the Vienna underground network since 1995 . In the local area there is the Erlaaer Straße underground station and - on the border with Siebenhirten - the Perfektastraße underground station .

With the address Erlaaer Straße 74 there is an elementary school of the city of Vienna in the district part, which is housed in a building erected in 1901.
