Anton Radl (born April 15, 1774 in Vienna , † March 4, 1852 in Frankfurt am Main ) was an Austro-German painter and engraver .

Life

Anton Radl was the son of a carpenter. After the early death of his father, he made a living as a painter's assistant. At the same time he became a student of the Vienna Drawing Academy. In 1790 Radl went to Brussels and attended the lessons of the painter Kormer. In 1794 he moved to Frankfurt. There he apprenticed with the engraver Johann Gottlieb Prestel and became his assistant. He learned engraving, etching and gouache painting . In 1800 Radl married the graphic restorer Rosina Hochschlitz, who also worked for Prestel. In addition to his work as a painter and graphic artist, Radl gave private lessons. In addition to Wilhelm Amandus Beer, Heinrich Rosenkranz and Christian Wagner, his students also included "Rosette" Städel, b. Willemer. Radl's study trips led to Northern Germany in 1817/18 and to the Black Forest in 1825. He created 16 gouaches for Adam Storck's book Views of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen and its surroundings , which were engraved in copper in 1822. He probably traveled to Switzerland and the Danube in the 1830s.

In addition to the landscapes he visited on his travels, he painted motifs from the area around Frankfurt am Main, the Middle Rhine and the Taunus . The Dutch landscape painting of the 17th century always remained a model for him.

Cityscapes and buildings were also part of his repertoire in addition to folk scenes. He worked in oil on canvas, wood, cardboard and copper, painted watercolors and gouaches and created drawings and graphic works.
