Anton Tanner (born August 22, 1807 in Arth SZ ; † November 22, 1893 in Lucerne ) was a Swiss Catholic theologian and provost of the St. Leodegar monastery in Lucerne.

Life

Tanner finished his high school studies at the college in Lucerne, which he had attended since autumn 1824, and then began his theology studies at the theological college with Professors Alois Gügler , Franz Geiger and Joseph Widmer . In 1829 he moved to Tübingen , where Professors Hirscher , Drey and Möhler ( Tübingen School ) had a decisive influence on him. In 1830 he entered the seminary in Chur and was ordained a priest at Easter 1831. In the fall of 1831 he became a secondary school teacher in Hitzkirch; from autumn 1834 to 1851 he was a grammar school teacher in Lucerne, from 1851 to 1876 professor of apologetics and dogmatics at the theological college there, since 1843 at the same time canon of the St. Leodegar monastery in the courtyard . In 1851 he became custodian of the monastery and on February 17, 1865 he was provost. From 1865 to 1884 he was a member of the cantonal education council and since 1868 of the directorate of studies. In 1862 he received an honorary doctorate in theology in Freiburg im Breisgau , in 1885 he was episcopal commissioner and in 1886 non-resident canon . In 1869 he accompanied the Basel bishop Eugène Lachat to the 1st Vatican Council and returned from there in February 1870 as an opponent of papal infallibility.

His brother was the Benedictine abbot Plazidus Tanner from Engelberg Monastery .
