Anton Themann

Anton Themann (born September 18, 1886 in Steinfeld (Oldenburg) , † April 4, 1965 in Refrath ) was a German politician.

Life

Themann was the son of the hayman Franz Anton Themann (* 1848) and Maria Josephina geb. von Wohlden (* 1852). He attended primary school in Mühlen and then went to sea as a cabin boy on a herring cutter and a passenger steamer . From 1908 he attended the mission school in Grave (Netherlands). Between 1914 and 1918 he served as a soldier in World War I and was seriously wounded during the hostilities. After the war he became a hired man in Düpe. In 1920 he was a co-founder of the "Association of Small Agricultural Enterprises", which organized the hiring men of the Oldenburger Münsterland . In order to represent the interests of farmers, he became managing director of the association based in Vechta and, after its forced dissolution in 1933 by the National Socialists, managing director of the rural health insurance fund, which he also co-founded in 1927 (today: Alte Oldenburger Krankenversicherung ). As the editor in charge, he was also responsible for the association's magazine Der Landmann and campaigned for the establishment of rural settlements in Calhorn and Carolinenhof near Barßel .

Parallel to his professional activities, Themann belonged to the Oldenburg State Parliament for the Catholic Center Party from 1924 until its dissolution by the National Socialists in 1933 . After the unsuccessful assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler , Themann was arrested on July 23, 1944 as part of the wave of arrests, Aktion Grid . He was only released from the Gestapo prison in Oldenburg- Osternburg on February 14, 1945 .

After the end of the war, he joined the CDU as a founding member of the party in the Vechta district and, as its member, was a member of the Appointed Landtag of Oldenburg from January to November 1946 and, after the state of Lower Saxony was founded, of the Lower Saxony Landtag from April 20, 1947 to April 30, 1951 on. In 1951 he renounced another candidacy.

Themann married the farmer's daughter Maria Bavendiek (1896–1978) in Steinfeld on June 1, 1922. The couple had three daughters and one son.
