His first work, the collection of poems Flowers from Krain (1781), which he wrote in German , was created during his time in Vienna . After his return to Laibach, Linhart initially worked as the bishop's archivist, but was given the post of district school inspector in 1789. As this he was very committed to the establishment of elementary schools, especially in the country. He was also committed to founding a public study library in Ljubljana, which later became the Slovenian National and University Library . It was then that Linhart's first drama was written , titled Miss Jenny Love (1790), which was also written in German.

In the following years, Linhart began to meet important representatives of the Slovenian Enlightenment, including Sigmund Zois von Edelstein , Valentin Vodnik, Jernej Kopitar and Jurij Japelj. Under the influence of Enlightenment ideas, Linhart began to study the Slovene language , culture and history . His next two plays, Ta veseli dan ali Matiček se ženi (This Happy Day or Matiček Marries) (1784) and Županova Micka (The Mayor's Micka) (1790), were already written in Slovenian. They represent the first comedies in the Slovenian language and had a great influence on the further development of Slovenian literature.

In 1787 he married Jožefina Detel from Laibach and had two daughters with her. They lived in Laibach in the Zois house on the Breg, and in 1792 he moved to a new home at the Lyceum . Linhart also began working on the first complete work on Slovenian history. He shouldn't be able to complete this project. He began building his own home in 1795, but suffered a stroke midway through the construction work which resulted in his death at the age of only 38. Nevertheless, his work had a decisive influence on the emerging Slovenian national movement in the 19th century . His widow completed the house, but sold the domicile three years later and his children went to Vienna .
