Anton Wendler

Anton Wendler (born August 13, 1934 in Amsterdam , Netherlands ; † June 15, 2017 ) was an Austrian opera singer ( tenor ).

Anton Wendler who studied at the Faculty of Arts University of Vienna , the subjects journalism and English literature . At the same time, he completed a vocal course to become an opera singer at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts . In 1960 he received his doctorate in philosophy (Dr. phil.). His debut as an opera singer took place in the 1966/67 season in Ulm . From 1967 to 1972 he was engaged at the Innsbruck State Theater . In 1972 he was employed as an assistant director at the Vienna State Opera, where he also worked as a director.

From 1974 he appeared at the Vienna State Opera, mostly in small and medium-sized roles, also as an opera singer. He made his house debut in May 1974 as matchmaker Goro in Madama Butterfly . His roles at the Vienna State Opera also included the notary Dr. Blind ( Die Fledermaus ) , Abbé ( Andrea Chénier ) , the judge Don Curzio ( Le nozze di Figaro ) , Alcindoro ( La Bohème ) , Spoletta ( Tosca ) and Bardolfo ( Falstaff ). In total he appeared in 41 roles in 36 works on a total of 561 evenings at the Vienna State Opera. He had his last appearance in June 1999 as Pontevedrin Consul Bogdanowitsch in the operetta The Merry Widow .

In addition to his work at the Vienna State Opera, he staged numerous operas and operettas as a freelance director, including in Barcelona and Tokyo . Since 1988 he has been temporarily head of the opera class at the Bruckner Conservatory in Linz .

From 1982 and again from 1991 he was works council for the performing artistic staff of the Vienna State Opera for four years. Wendler lived in Pötzleinsdorf . He died at the age of 82.

Wendler was married. His son is the Austrian film composer Edwin Wendler (* 1975) , who lives and works in the United States .
