Anton von Grafenstein

Anton von Grafenstein (born January 14, 1780 in Parkstein ; † October 3, 1854 in Krummennaab ) was senior postmaster in Bamberg and founder of the oldest monument protection association in Bavaria, the "Altenburgverein".

Life

Grafenstein was an officer in the Bavarian Army who was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Military Max Joseph Order and the Legion of Honor in the Napoleonic Wars in 1806 . Later he was chief postmaster in Bamberg and the initiator of the establishment of the "Association for the Rescue of Altenburg", the first monument protection association in Bavaria. A memorial plaque in the gatehouse of Altenburg reminds of him . From 1833 he was an honorary citizen of Bamberg . Grafensteinstrasse in Bamberg was named after him. He was also postmaster in Brixen and Regensburg , as well as travel commissioner for the Empress of Russia. In 1838 he was therefore awarded the Order of St. Stanislaus . The Bavarian King paid tribute to Grafenstein in 1842 by awarding him the Cross of Honor of the Order of Ludwig .

Grafenstein was the master of Krummennaab, which was sold by his widow in 1856.

family

His older brother Eduard (1776-1824) was a Bavarian district judge at Parkstein and Nabburg and a lord of Gänlas and Röthenbach .
