Antonie Volkmar

Antonie Elisabeth Cäcilie Caroline Volkmar (born April 24, 1827 in Berlin ; † 1903 there ) was a German genre and portrait painter .

Life

Volkmar was born in Berlin as the fourth daughter of the banker Moritz Daniel Volkmar and his wife Louise, née Goldschmidt. From 1848 she took lessons there from the painter Julius Schrader . From 1853 to 1857 she continued her education with Léon Cogniet in Paris . Then she settled as a painter in Berlin. In her studio she discovered the talent of the young Max Liebermann in 1859 when he visited it in the company of his mother, who had Volkmar portray her. Volkmar stayed in Italy from 1862 to 1864 . Her student was Clara von Rappard .
