Life

The son of Sante Elia and Catherine Blasi Elia turned out to be a daring seafarer during clashes with pirates in 1825.

From Antonio Elias' marriage to Maddalena Pelosi Elia, seven children were born.

In the struggle for the unity of Italy, Antonio Elia joined the Carbonari and then the Young Italy . As an experienced seaman, he dealt with correspondence with like-minded people who had to live abroad.

During the First Italian War of Independence Antonio Elia fought together with his son Augusto under Garibaldi . But in the second half of June 1849 the end of the Roman Republic, proclaimed by Mazzini on February 9, 1849, drew near . Pius IX had called the French into the country from their exile in Gaeta . That is not enough. The Pope wanted his Papal States again and have the possessions in Ancona. So Pius IX called. also the Austrians to help. Count von Wimpffen hurried up with his expeditionary force and forced Ancona to surrender on June 19, 1849 after a cannonade. Antonio Elia, one of Ancona's defenders, was arrested for illegal possession of weapons, sentenced by a court of law and shot on July 25th together with the farmer Giuseppe Magini. The farmer had been convicted of armed resistance. Only in 1875 did the son Augusto find out about the place where his father was buried. Today the freedom fighter rests in the Tavernelle cemetery.
