Augusto Elia
Augusto Elia (born September 4, 1829 in Ancona , † February 9, 1919 in Rome ) was an Italian officer and politician.
Life
The son of Antonio Elia and Maddalena Pelosi Elia followed their father in June 1848 at sea in the fight against the Austrians in Trieste .
During the First Italian War of Independence , Augusto defended the hometown of Ancona as an artillery officer together with his father. In the second half of June 1849 the end of the Roman Republic, proclaimed by Mazzini on February 9, 1849, drew near . Pius IX wanted his papal state including the possessions in Ancona back. So the Pope called the Austrians for help. Count von Wimpffen besieged Ancona from May 28 to June 15, 1849 and forced the city to surrender on June 19 after a cannonade. Augusto's father was shot by the Austrians. Augusto managed to escape to Malta , brought it to the sea captain and then stayed in New York. In May 1859 Augusto Elia returned to Italy and met Garibaldi in Como . As an Alpine hunter , he moved into the Garibaldi Freischar on June 13, 1859 in Brescia, which was occupied by the Austrians before the Battle of San Fermo . He then accompanied Garibaldi to Modena , Rimini and on the island of Caprera .
In Sicily , Augusto Elia took part in the procession of a thousand and saved Garibaldi's life on May 15, 1860 during the Battle of Calatafimi . He sustained a serious facial injury. But on November 3, 1867, Augusto Elia was again at Garibaldi's side in the unfortunate battle of Mentana .
The marriage to Maria Balani Elia had two children.
From 1876 to 1897 Augusto Elia was a deputy in the Kingdom of Italy .
From 1872 the Freemason Augusto Elia was a member of the Giuseppe Garibaldi Lodge in Ancona. In 1896 the Ancona Freemasons delegated him to the Supreme Council of the Grande Oriente d'Italia .
In 1897 the colonel retired into private life and wrote his autobiography from the life of a Garibaldi supporter . In the first and second cabinet of Antonio Salandra , Elia was Secretary of State ( sottosgretario ) in the War Ministry from October 15, 1914 to July 9, 1915 .
