Antonio González y González , Marquis (Marqués) of Valdeterrazo (born January 5, 1792 in Valencia de Monbuey ( province of Badajoz ), † November 30, 1876 in Madrid ) was a Spanish politician and Prime Minister of Spain ( Presidente del Gobierno ) .

biography

Década Ominosa and reign of Isabella II

González completed a law degree and later volunteered in a battalion during the Spanish War of Independence .

During the period known as the "Ominous Decade" ( Década Ominosa ) after the French invasion of Spain in 1823 and the death of Ferdinand VII on September 29, 1833, he was in exile in America , where he became friends with Brigadier General Baldomero Espartero , whose close friendship political ally he was in later years.

During the reign of Queen Isabella II , he was elected Member of Parliament ( Congreso de los Diputados ) on June 30, 1834 , where he alternated the interests of the constituencies of Badajoz , León , Valencia , Albacete , Madrid until February 27, 1843 and represented Cadiz . At times he was also President of the Cortes in 1836 and 1837.

In the electoral term from 1837 to 1838 he was a member of the Senate as a representative of the province of Huelva .

Prime Minister and last years of life

On December 6, 1838 he was Minister for Appeals for Grace and Justice ( Ministro de Gracia y Justicia ) in the cabinet of Bernardino Fernández de Velasco for three days . After Evaristo Pérez de Castro Brito's dismissal , he finally became Prime Minister of Spain ( Presidente de Gobierno ) on July 20, 1840 . However, he lost the office of prime minister after just under a month on August 12, 1840 to Valentín Ferraz . During his brief tenure, he was again Minister for Grace and Justice.

On May 20, 1841, he was again prime minister, making it the first prime minister during the reign of General Espartero. During his tenure, which lasted until June 17, 1842, this time he was also Foreign Minister ( Ministro de Estado ).

Between 1846 and 1847 he worked as a Senator for life ( Senador Vitalicio ) before he was later ambassador to London . From October 4, 1854 to 1856, he was again a member of parliament as a representative of the constituency of Badajoz. In the following years he also worked as a publicist .

Finally, from February 2, 1876 until his death, he was again a member of the Senate as representative of the province of Almería .
