Antonio Maria Mazzoni (born January 4, 1717 in Bologna , † December 8, 1785 ibid) was an Italian composer and singer .

Life

Mazzoni came from a humble background. He studied music in his hometown and received training as a singer. He made a name for himself as an opera composer and became a member of the Accademia Filarmonica . He then lived as Kapellmeister in Bologna, but also made frequent trips abroad, where his operas were performed with success. He worked at the court in Lisbon , where two of his theatrical works were successful at the Ópera do Tejo . As a refugee from the consequences of the earthquake of November 1, 1755, he came to Madrid , where he composed for the Spanish court. The court opera director Carlo Broschi ( Farinelli ) commissioned him to set the text book Il re pastore by Pietro Metastasio , which was successfully performed as Aminta in 1756. Following his stay in Madrid, he went to Saint Petersburg for an engagement , but Bologna remained the center of his life. He was one of the recognized musical personalities in his hometown.

In addition to his operas, numerous solfeggias , sketches for operas and oratorios have come down to us. He wrote in a catchy, easy to understand style.
