Antonio Tizzano

Antonio Tizzano (born January 1, 1940 in Naples ) is an Italian lawyer and judge . From October 8, 2015 to October 8, 2018 he was Vice President of the European Court of Justice (ECJ).

Career

Antonio Tizzano was born on January 1, 1940 in the Italian port city of Naples. In 1962 he finished his law studies at the University of Naples . From 1962 to 1967 he was a university assistant at the Chair of International Law at the Faculty of Law at the University of Naples. At the same faculty he finally acquired the license to teach (venia legendi) for international law in 1967 .

From 1967 to 1972 Tizzano took on a first teaching position as a professor of international law at the National University of Somalia in the Somali capital Mogadishu . In 1969 he took a position at the political science faculty of the Sicilian University of Catania as a professor of European law . From 1976 to 1982 he was director of the Department for Political and Social Science Studies and from 1977 to 1979 a member of the administrative board of this institute.

In 1969, Antonio Tizzano also took over a teaching duties as a professor of international law at the Political Science Faculty of the University of Naples L'Orientale and taught there until 1979, before he as professor to the Chair of European Law at the Law Faculty of the University of Naples appointed has been. Since 1993, Antonio Tizzano teaches at the Economics Faculty of the Roman Sapienza University as a professor of European law. From 1984 to 1992 Tizzano was also legal advisor to the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Italy to the European Communities and was a member of the Italian delegations in negotiations on the accession and treaty extensions of the European Communities. In 1999 he was appointed to the Independent Financial Review Group of the Commission of the European Communities .

On October 7, 2000, Antonio Tizzano was appointed Advocate General at the European Court of Justice . On May 4, 2006, Tizzano became a judge at the European Court of Justice and on October 6, 2009 he presided over the First Chamber of the Court of Justice. Antonio Tizzano served as Vice-President of the European Court of Justice from October 8, 2015 until he left the Court of Justice on October 6, 2018. His successor as Italian judge at the European Court of Justice was Lucia Serena Rossi on October 8, 2018 .
