action

In 1195 a son was born in Lisbon to the married couple Donna Maria and Cavalier Don Martino and baptized Fernando. The mother entrusts the newborn to the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary .

Fernando grows up with virtues like obedience and charity. Instead of playing with other children, he prefers to decorate the altar; it is also very important to him to help the poor and hungry. His father instructs him to protect the fields he cultivates against sparrows. Since he wants to obey on the one hand but does not want to starve the birds on the other, he lets them eat at his home while he prays in the church. His astonished father explains this with a miracle from heaven. When two children knocked over a water jug while playing at a fountain and Fernando prays, the water jug was restored to health. When the devil disturbs him while praying, he repels him with the sign of the cross.

As a grown young man, Fernando places little world on earthly temptations such as honor and women. A little later he goes to the monastery. Obliged to remain in his cell, he worships the most holy of holies . He also donates alms to the Franciscans in Coimbra Abbey.

In 1219 St. Francis of Assisi took his students to Morocco to preach the Gospel . In Morocco five Franciscans end up in prison and suffer martyrdom . Inspired in prayer, Fernando joins the Franciscans and takes the name Antony. His desire to become a missionary is granted. As soon as he arrives in Morocco, he falls ill and has to return. Antony and his companions shipwreck off the coast of Sicily; they are rescued by fishermen.

After their recovery they make their way to the nearby Portiuncula , where they are received by Cardinal Ugolino. In the monastery he works in the household and in the fields. When he stands in for a fancy preacher during the service, his gift for speech is noticeable.

His apostolate in Rimini begins with a miracle when he is initially scorned during a sermon, but it falls silent when he sermons the fish and they swim up to hear him. As a result, many sinners can be converted. In Bourges, France, the inhabitants are being converted when a mule spurns its food in front of the sanctuary. Antonius seeks relaxation in the Brine grotto.

Back in Italy, Antonius wants to build a church. When the worker in the quarry refuses to transport the necessary stones because he is supposed to be transporting his dead son, he is really dead a little later. When the desperate father asks Antonius for help, he brings the son back to life.

In Lisbon, Antony's father is wrongly accused of murder. While Antonius is reading a mass in Padua , he appears in Lisbon and questions the murdered man, who can immediately name his real murderer. A little later, Antonius heals a young man who has chopped off his foot in desperation that he hit his mother.

Antonius is visiting his friend Count Tiso. There the baby Jesus appears to him while he is praying .

A little later he becomes seriously ill and asks to be brought back to Padua. He accepts the advice to be taken to the nearest monastery. After seeing God, he died calmly on June 13, 1231. Antony was buried with great sympathy from the population.
