The district of Anuradhapura ( Sinhala අනුරාධපුර දිස්ත්රික්කය anūrādhapūra distrikkaya ; Tamil அனுராதபுரம் மாவட்டம் Aṉurātapuram māvaṭṭam ) is a district in the north-central province of Sri Lanka . The main town is Anuradhapura .
geography
The district of Anuradhapura is located in the northern interior of Sri Lanka and belongs to the north-central province . Neighboring districts are Polonnaruwa in the southeast, Matale in the south, Kurunegala in the southwest, Puttalam in the west, Mannar in the northwest, Vavuniya in the north and Trincomalee in the east.
The district of Anuradhapura covers an area of 7,179 square kilometers (of which 6,664 square kilometers are land and 515 square kilometers are inland water). This makes it the largest district in Sri Lanka.

According to the 2012 census, the Anuradhapura district has 860,575 inhabitants. With 129 inhabitants per square kilometer, the population density is well below the Sri Lankan average (325 inhabitants per square kilometer). Of the residents, 420,100 (48.82%) were male and 440,475 (51.18%) were female. The population is very young. This is illustrated by a look at the age distribution.

Sinhalese The vast majority of the residents of Anuradhapura District are Sinhalese . They make up the majority of the population in all DS divisions. Their share ranges between 78.70% in Kekirawa and 99.95% in Rajanganaya.
Moors There is also a minority of Moors or Tamil-speaking Muslims. Their share ranges between 0% in Rajanganaya and 18.41% in Kekirawa.
Sri Lankan Tamils Sri Lankan Tamils are only a small minority. Nowhere do they make up more than 2.5% of the total population of a DS Division.

Population of the district by confession
Almost all Sinhalese residents of Anuradhapura are Buddhist , while the Moors and Malays are all Islamic . The Christianity , which includes a minority of Tamils and Burghers and Hinduism (majority of Tamils) are only small minority religions.

Population development
The district's population is growing rapidly. In the period from 2001 to 2012 (the last two census years) the increase was 114,882 people. This is a growth of 15.41%. The population has quadrupled since independence.
Significant places
The only big place is Anuradhapura . 50,595 people lived there in 2012 (census).
Local administration
The head of the district holds the title of District Secretary. The district is further divided into 22 divisions (under a Division Secretary). The cities and larger towns have their own administration (municipal parliament or council). There are 694 village administrations (Grama Niladharis) for the 2,584 villages in the entire district.
