The black-chin dwarf cichlid ( Apistogramma allpahuayo ) is a species from the cichlid family (Cichlidae).
distribution
The black-chin dwarf cichlid lives in small forest streams in the National Park Reserva Nacional Allpahuayo Mishana in Loreto , Peru , in the catchment area of the Rio Nanay about 30 kilometers southwest of Iquitos .
features
The male can reach a size of about 8 cm, the female is about half that size. In addition, males can be recognized by their longer anal and dorsal fins. The males are characterized by the elongated first rays of the extended dorsal fin and the slightly extended tips of the caudal fin. They are thus very similar to the cockatoo dwarf cichlid , to whose group they are counted. Both sexes show a black chin stripe under the bulging lips, which gives the animals their German name.
Color shapes
The black-chin dwarf cichlid comes in two color variants: males with yellow markings or males with blue markings below the brown-black side line.
Behavior and reproduction
Black-chin dwarf cichlids are polygamous. Several females can live in a male's territory. The females are cavity-brooding and lay around 50 to 60 eggs. During the courtship and breeding season, the females have an intense yellow color with black pectoral fins, black first rays of the dorsal fin and either a solid black side line or a black point on the side line. The male defends the breeding area and sometimes takes part in the brood care.
Aquaristics
The black-chin dwarf cichlid lives in black water , so soft and acidic water is recommended. Mainly live food is eaten . This dwarf cichlid is easy to breed under these conditions.
particularities
Peter Pretor was able to observe that this species can lead to a sex change .
