The Schelfstadt, originally the Schelfe , since 1349 also Neustadt , developed from the 11th century as an initially independent place and from 1705 as a city.

The independent Schelfstadt was combined with the old town of Schwerin in 1832. After Grand Duke Paul Friedrich moved the ducal court from Ludwigslust to Schwerin in 1837 , the city also expanded to the north. Before 1840, the gardens on Apothekerstraße still extended to Pfaffenteich . Hofbaumeister Georg Adolf Demmler began straightening the Pfaffenteich bank around 1840. From the 1870s, the development on the east bank (today August-Bebel-Straße) was built.

As part of urban development funding , the Schelfstadt was redeveloped in 1991 . The street and the houses were then renovated.

In terms of traffic , the road is affected by bus line 11 operated by Nahverkehr Schwerin GmbH (NVS).
