The Aradosee is a lake in the Teltower Vorstadt district of Potsdam . It is relatively central, slightly hidden between the grounds of the Märkische Allgemeine , Nutheschnellstrasse , the area of the oldest housing association in Potsdam, the Daheim colony , and a larger allotment garden . The lake is separated from the Nuthe by a dam . At one point there is a puncture with a tube; the only connection between the two waters.

history

Emergence

The Aradosee was created around 1750 when the Nuthe in Potsdam was straightened. The excavated earth was used for straightening. The lake takes its name from a formerly adjacent branch of the Arado-Werke armaments factory , which "employed" around 15,000 forced laborers during the Second World War . Parts for the then innovative Arado bomber aircraft were built in the plant, and the central administration of the Arado plants has been located there since 1936. It was destroyed on April 14, 1945 . Today the Märkische Verlags- und Druckgesellschaft , which publishes the Märkische Allgemeine , is located on this site .

Development after the fall of the Wall

The lake is a former quarry pond , which was formerly used as a bathing lake by the residents - presumably until the turning point , when the dam between Nuthe and the lake was raised and thus became too steep for a shallow beach . In addition to being used as a bathing lake, the lake has long been used as a fishing lake and was later prepared for sport fishing by adding the main fish species roach , bream , lead , carp , crucian carp , less eel , pike and pikeperch . In addition, however - usually in summer - the lake occasionally tips over , which is less due to insufficient water exchange with the Nuthe than more to the imbalance or even to the excessive oxygen consumption - such as algae , which in summer bloom .

fauna

The Aradosee is said to be rich in fish. Especially bream, crucian carp, roach, lead and pike live in the lake. Blessrallen regularly breed on the lake and raise their young here. Other regularly encountered water birds are the gray heron , cormorant , mallard and mandarin duck . In addition, red- eared ear turtles and yellow-bellied ear turtles have lived in the lake for many years . These non-native, abandoned turtles pose a threat to the waterfowl as they also eat their chicks.

Others

Since 2011, students from the Bertha-von-Suttner-Gymnasium in Potsdam-Babelsberg have been studying the ecosystem of Lake Arado as part of their lessons. In this context, several rubbish collection campaigns were carried out on the lake shore. In October 2017, the school project "The Aradosee - an exciting ecosystem in Potsdam-Babelsberg" was awarded the State Nature Conservation Prize of the Brandenburg Nature Conservation Fund Foundation.

As part of a planned thorough renovation of the lake, a systematic search for contaminated ammunition was carried out from 2019. In July 2020, a dud was found in the Aradosee. It was an American aerial bomb weighing 250 kilograms. On July 15, 2020, the heavily encrusted bomb, which was in a desolate state, was blown up.
