Aramoana ( German : way to the sea ), also called " The Spit "by the locals, is a settlement on the coast of Dunedin on the South Island of New Zealand .

geography

Aramoana is located about 27 km north of the center of Dunedin on a Sanddünen- spit the mouth of the Otago Harbor s in the Pacific Ocean . The easternmost point of the Otago Peninsula is opposite the settlement that belongs to the urban area of Dunedin and the Otago region .

history

The settlement was established in the 1880s as a pilot station for navigating ships through the narrowness of Otago Harbor . It quickly developed into a small village. In the 1950s, Aramoana became a popular seaside resort for the local population due to its quiet, rural character and its beautiful beach, which is now protected from water waves by a pier that extends around 1200 m into the sea .

In 1974 the Save Aramoana Campaign was launched to prevent the government from building an aluminum smelter. The construction is still a moot point.

Inextricably linked to the place is the Aramoana rampage in November 1990, the deadliest shootout in New Zealand's history, in which a man shot 13 residents and holed himself up in a house after a neighborhood dispute. After the whole place was cordoned off, special police units had to search almost every single house in order to evacuate remaining residents and find the perpetrator, who was later killed in an exchange of fire.

Recreation and leisure

" Aramoana Beach ", also called " Big Beach ", runs north of the pier . It is a 2 km long, white sandy beach that is flanked by volcanic rocks. To the south-east of the breakwater, another white sandy beach runs along the entire length of the spit out into the bay; this is called " Shelley Beach ". The beaches and waters are used by swimmers, divers and surfers, the rocks on Big Beach are also used by climbers.

In the area around Aramoana , especially in the area of the spit and mole, populations of sea lions and yellow-eyed penguins can be found, which can be seen sunbathing on the beaches and rocks.
