Araucaria bernieri is a species of the genus Araucaria ( Araucaria ). It is endemic tothe south of theisland of Grande Terre, part of New Caledonia .

description

Vegetative characteristics

Araucaria bernieri grows as a columnar, evergreen tree that can reach heights of 40 to 50 meters. The gray bark peels off in thin strips. The 4 to 6 millimeter thick branches of one level are arranged in a U-shape.

On young specimens, the leaves are needle-like and relatively thick, with a length of about 7 millimeters, triangular with a sharply pointed upper end. In older specimens, the sheets, which overlap like roof tiles, are 2 to 3.5 millimeters long and 1.5 to 2.5 millimeters wide, are scale-like, keeled-triangular with a curved upper end.

Generative characteristics

Araucaria bernieri is dioeciously separated sex ( diocesan ). The bluish-white colored male cones are cylindrical in shape with a length of 4 to 9 centimeters and a diameter of 0.8 to 1.6 centimeters. They contain triangular microsporophylls with four to six pollen sacs. The clearly blue-green colored female cones have a length of 10 centimeters and a diameter of 7.5 to 8 centimeters. The egg-shaped with a length of about 3 centimeters has a broadly rounded wing.

Occurrence

The natural range of Araucaria bernieri includes the island of Grande Terre, part of New Caledonia . It occurs in the southern part of the island from Col de Petchécara to Plaine des Lacs . The suspected occurrence in the northern part of the island in the area around the municipality of Poum turned out to be specimens of the species Araucaria scopulorum de Laubenfels .

Araucaria bernieri thrives at altitudes between 0 and 700 meters. It mainly inhabits moist, evergreen forests and river valleys. It thrives primarily on soils that develop on ultramafic rock .

Systematics

Araucaria bernieri belongs to the section Eutacta within the genus of the Araucarias ( Araucaria ). The first description of Araucaria bernieri was made in 1949 by John Theodore Buchholz in Bulletin du Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle , 21, S. 280th

The Araucaria bernieri var. Pumilio , described in 2000 by John Silba , which was found near Tiébaghi in the northern part of Grande Terre, later turned out to be Araucaria scopulorum de Laubenfels .

Hazard and protection

Araucaria bernieri is listed on the IUCN Red List as "endangered". The total stock is estimated at less than 10,000 trees and is expected to decrease by around 10% within the next 10 years. Mine construction and related activities such as road construction and spoil storage are cited as one of the main risk factors. Forest fires pose a particular threat to regeneration. The threat from logging is only of minor importance today.
