Araucaria scopulorum is a species of the genus Araucaria ( Araucaria ). It is endemic to theisland of Grande Terre, part of New Caledonia .

description

Araucaria scopulorum grows as an evergreen tree that can reach heights of 4 to 20 meters. The crown is oval in shape. The light gray, almost white bark flakes off in thin strips. The feathery branches are 6 to 8 millimeters thick.

On young specimens, the approximately 7 millimeter long leaves are scale-like and curved inward. On older specimens, the roof-tile-like, scale-like leaves are egg-shaped with a length of 3 to 4 millimeters and a width of 2.5 to 3 millimeters with a pronounced central rib. The tip is curved.

The male cones are 3 to 5 centimeters long and 0.7 to 1.1 centimeters in diameter, twisted-cylindrical in shape. They contain triangular microsporophylls with six pollen sacs. No description is available for the female cones. The seed becomes about 3 centimeters long and has a broad wing.

Occurrence

The natural range of Araucaria scopulorum includes the north and east of Grande Terre . They can be found in the area around Poum in the north and Thio in the south, as well as at Cap Bocage near Houaïlou .

Araucaria scopulorum thrives at altitudes from 0 to 600 meters. It grows mainly in bush forests, facing the sea, steep slopes and mountain ridges.

Systematics

Araucaria scopulorum belongs to the section Eutacta within the genus of the Araucarias ( Araucaria ). It was first described as Araucaria scopulorum in 1969 by David John de Laubenfels in Travaux du Laboratorie Forestier de Toulouse , Volume 1 (8), Article 5, p. 1.

Hazard and protection

Araucaria scopulorum is listed as "endangered" on the IUCN Red List . Mine construction is cited as the main risk factor.
