Araucaria montana is a species of the Araucarias ( Araucaria ). It is endemic to the New Caledonia islands of Grande Terre and Ile d'Art .

description

Araucaria montana grows as a columnar, evergreen tree that can reach heights of 10 to 40 meters. The dark brown or gray bark flakes off in thin strips or scales. The branches are 1.5 to 2.2 centimeters thick.

The leaves of young specimens are scale-like and have a curved tip. With a length of around 10 millimeters and a width of 4 to 5 millimeters, they are egg-shaped to lanceolate. On older specimens, the flaky leaves, which are loosely tiled like overlapping, are ovoid with a length of 11 to 14 millimeters and a width of 7 to 8 millimeters with a pronounced central rib. The curved tip is pointed or blunt.

The male cones are cylindrical in shape with a length of 8 to 13.5 centimeters and a diameter of 2 to 2.8 centimeters. They contain triangular microsporophylls with twelve pollen sacs. The female cones have a length of 8 to 9 centimeters and a diameter of 6 to 8 centimeters. With a size of around 3.2 centimeters, the seed has an oval wing.

Occurrence

The natural range of Araucaria montana includes the whole island of Grande Terre belonging to New Caledonia . An isolated occurrence exists on the Ile d'Art belonging to the Belep Islands .

Araucaria montana thrives at altitudes between 200 and 1400 meters. The species grows on soils that develop on ultramafic rocks . It occurs mainly in high thickets and in moist rainforests.

Systematics

Araucaria montana belongs to the section Eutacta within the genus of the Araucarias ( Araucaria ). The first description as Araucaria montana was in 1871 by Adolphe Brongniart and Jean Antoine Arthur Gris in Annales des Sciences Naturelles; Botanique, sér. 5 13, p. 358.

Hazard and protection

Araucaria montana is listed as “endangered” on the IUCN Red List . It has the largest range of all Araucaria species found in New Caledonia. However, it is believed that stocks will decline by around 30% over the next hundred years. Mining and the associated activities such as road construction and clearance storage are named as the main risk factor. Forest fires are also a danger.
