Araucaria nemorosa is a species of the genus Araucaria ( Araucaria ). It is an endemic endemic to the New Caledonia island of Grande Terre, which is threatened with extinction.

description

Araucaria nemorosa grows as an evergreen tree that can reach heights of up to 15 meters. The crown is oval to conical in shape. The branches are 8 to 12 millimeters thick.

The relatively thick leaves on young specimens are scaly and inwardly curved. They are lanceolate in shape. On older specimens, the roof-tile-like, scale-like leaves are 6 to 10 millimeters long and 1.5 to 3 millimeters wide and lanceolate with a pronounced central rib. The curved tip is pointed or blunt.

The male cones are cylindrical in shape with a length of around 8 centimeters and a diameter of around 1.4 centimeters. They contain triangular microsporophylls with six pollen sacs. The female cones are egg-shaped with a length of around 11 centimeters and a diameter of 5 to 9 centimeters. The seed is about 3 centimeters long and has broad, egg-shaped wings. The seedlings form four cotyledons ( cotyledons off).

Occurrence

The natural range of Araucaria nemorosa is in the area around Port Boise . There are said to be other deposits between Cap Ndoua and Cap Reine Charlotte . None of the stocks are more than two kilometers from the coast.

Araucaria nemorosa thrives at altitudes between 20 and 185 meters. The annual rainfall is between 2500 and 3000 millimeters. The species grows on soils that develop on ultramafic rocks , especially peridotite . It occurs mainly in evergreen forests along the coast.

Systematics

Araucaria nemorosa belongs to the section Eutacta within the genus of the Araucarias ( Araucaria ). It was first described as Araucaria nemorosa in 1969 by David John de Laubenfels in Travaux du Laboratorie Forestier de Toulouse , 1 (5-8), art. 5, p. 1.

Hazard and protection

Araucaria nemorosa is listed as "critically endangered" on the IUCN Red List . The total population includes less than 5000 trees. Mining and related activities such as road construction and spoil storage are named as the main risk factor. Furthermore, forest fires, settlement building and logging represent a danger. According to recent studies, there are indications of inbreeding in all stocks .
