Araucaria Rulei is a plant from the genus of Araukarien ( Araucaria ) in the family of Araucariaceae (Araucariaceae). It is a highly endangered endemic to the Grande Terre islandin New Caledonia .

description

Araucaria rulei grows as an evergreen tree that can reach heights of up to 30 meters. The shape of the crown resembles a spider. The branches reach a diameter of 2 to 2.5 centimeters. The dark brown bark flakes off in narrow strips or scales.

The leaves of young specimens are scale-like and have a pointed tip. On older specimens, the tiled, scale-like and twisted leaves are lanceolate with a length of 2 to 2.5 centimeters and a width of 1.1 to 1.4 centimeters with a pronounced central rib. The tip of the dark green leaves is curved.

The male cones are cylindrical in shape with a length of around 13 centimeters and a diameter of around 3 centimeters. They contain triangular microsporophylls with 15 pollen sacs. The female cones are around 12 inches long and around 8 inches thick. The seed is about 3 centimeters long and has an elongated tip and an egg-shaped wing.

Occurrence

The natural range of Araucaria rulei is in the center and south of Grande Terre . The individual stocks are, however, strongly fragmented.

Araucaria rulei thrives at altitudes of 400 to 1000 meters. The species grows on soils that develop on serpentine . It occurs mainly in dry forests and open bushland.

use

As an ornamental plant is Araucaria Rulei used primarily in Australia.

Systematics

Araucaria rulei belongs to the section Eutacta within the genus of the Araucaria ( Araucaria ). It was first described as Araucaria rulei in 1860 by Ferdinand von Mueller in Essay on the plants collected by Mr. Eugene Fitzalan, during Lieut. Smith's expedition to the estuary of the Burdekin 18.

Hazard and protection

Araucaria rulei is listed as "critically endangered" on the IUCN Red List . The individual populations are highly fragmented, so that there is hardly any genetic exchange between them. In the last hundred years the total stock has decreased by around 50%. Mining and related activities such as road construction and spoil storage are named as the main risk factor. Forest fires are also a threat. None of the known stocks are under protection, but attempts are being made to reforest in some areas.
