Araucaria subulata grows as an evergreen tree that can reach heights of up to 50 meters. The gray bark peels off in thin strips. The branches are 5 to 9 millimeters thick.

On young specimens, the scale-like leaves are approximately lanceolate and curved inward. On older specimens, the tile-like, overlapping, scale-like leaves with a length of 4 to 6 millimeters and a width of 2 to 2.5 millimeters are keeled-lanceolate with a pronounced central rib. They are bent inwards.

The male cones are cylindrical in shape with a length of 5 to 10 centimeters and a diameter of 1.2 to 1.3 centimeters. They contain triangular microsporophylls with ten pollen sacs. The female cones are spherical in shape with a length of 11 to 12 centimeters and a diameter of 7 to 9 centimeters. The egg-shaped seed is about 3 centimeters long and has an almost rectangular wing.

Occurrence

The natural range of Araucaria subulata includes the island of Grande Terre . In the north of the island you can only find them on Mont Ignambi . In the south, its distribution area extends from Canala and the Table Unio over the Mont Dzumac to the Mont des Sources and the Rivière Bleue .

Araucaria subulata thrives at altitudes of 150 to 1900 meters. They are mainly found on soils that develop on ultramafic rock . It usually grows in dense and humid rainforests, where it is mainly found in canyons and steep valleys.

Systematics

Araucaria subulata belongs to the section Eutacta within the genus of the Araucarias ( Araucaria ). It was first described as Araucaria subulata in 1862 by Eugène Vieillard in Annales des Sciences Naturelles; Botanique , série 4, 16, p. 55. Synonyms for Araucaria subulata Vieill. are Eutacta subulata (Vieill.) Carrière and Araucaria balansae Brongn. & Griseb.

Hazard and protection

Araucaria subulata is listed on the IUCN Red List as "low risk". The common forest fires and the associated fragmentation of the distribution area are named as the main risk factor.
